Social Studies - Food, Surnames and Immigration

Hello,

I hope all is well.

Today, we are going to start investigating some of our personal heritage.  When we talk about heritage, in this context, we mean the practices and traditions that have been handed down from the past.  Many traditions in your family are probably practiced because they have been shared from one generation to the next.

A traditional meal can be something that is also passed down from generation to generation.  Is there a special dish/meal your family enjoys that has been in the family for generations?  Where did that dish/meal come from?  What is the history of that dish?

The practice of using a surname (last name) is a tradition that started in England sometime after 1066 when introduced by Norman barons. Google what your surname means. I found out that Tessier came from "Tisseur", which is a French verb meaning "to weave cloth".  You may find out something interesting about your last name, too. Let me know what you discover in the Google form below.

You will also find a video below about immigration in Canada.  This is census information collected by the federal government in 2016.  A census is “an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individuals.”  The word “enumerate” is used in the video, which, in this case, will be defined as counting and detailing information about people.
